34 Rise & shine Fraser Hodgson, Product Development Director of The Daylight Company, talks to Craft Focus about the company’s huge array of lighting solutions for your creative hobbies Tell us a little bit about the company. Where are you based? When did the company start? The Daylight Company is a UK-based company that specialises in creating innovative lighting solutions for various industries, including crafting, sewing, and reading. The company was founded in 1980 in London. Who founded the company and why? The Daylight Company’s founder, Patrick Jacquelin, discovered the need for better lighting solutions for artists, painters, sculptors, crafters, quilters, and sewers, who had difficulty working with poor lighting conditions in the ’80s. He introduced a forgotten technology, a blue-tinted daylight bulb, to these communities, and it was an instant success. Patrick saw an opportunity to begin designing lamps that met people’s specific needs, and the company’s success has been built on three guiding principles. Firstly, the ‘quality’ of light went beyond providing the right colour temperature for colour matching and good contrast qualities. Optimum brightness and the right spread of light were of equal importance. Secondly, the light needed to be positioned with ease, exactly where it was needed, which varied depending on the activity being undertaken. Thirdly, the more the lamp’s aesthetic design appealed to the user, the greater the pleasure it would provide. How has the company evolved? By 1995, the Daylight Company had become a leading manufacturer of lamps for the arts and crafts market and began exporting to Europe. In the years that followed, the company developed lamps for people with sight loss, the health and beauty and industrial markets, and began selling in the United States and Australia. The company has evolved to offer a range of specialised lamps in different markets, based on the principles established by its founder. What do you specialise in? The Daylight Company specialises in creating lighting solutions that simulate natural daylight, making it easier for people to work and read in a more comfortable and efficient way. The company’s products are designed to enhance productivity, reduce eye strain, and provide better lighting quality for various tasks.
