9 INDUSTRY NEWS Remembering Countess Charlotte de la Bedoyere Search Press is deeply saddened to announce the death of its founder, Countess Charlotte de la Bedoyere (Lotti), who died peacefully on 22nd of November 2024 at the age of 93. Lotti was a pioneering force in the publishing world, and the author of a number of popular books. We are thinking of the Search Press family at this difficult time. Lotti first came to the UK in 1938, travelling on the Kindertransport from her birthplace in Vienna. In the 1960s she took a relatively junior job at publisher Burns and Oates and eventually went on to purchase the publishing assets. Unable to publish under the name ‘Burns and Oates’, Search Press was born, named after her husband’s Catholic newsletter ‘Search’. In 1971, Lotti published her first practical, instructional craft book. Craft gradually took over as the main business of the company, and the company still thrives and prospers today as an independent, family-owned and family-run art and craft publisher; it still operates today in very much the way she set it up. After her retirement in 1997 she continued to photograph many of Search Press’ books but also concentrated on her great interest in natural woodland. She authored, among others, Plant a Natural Woodland and then Portrait of a Woodland, telling the story of the acres of indigenous trees she planted following the great storm of 1987. Industry news Latest news from the craft industry Gift cards prove to be a game changer for retailers Gift cards are proving to be a game-changer for retailers, offering a dual advantage of attracting new customers and driving incremental spend. Brands participating in multistore gift card schemes or offering their own gift cards are reaping the rewards, particularly from younger demographics like Millennials, who are embracing gift cards for their convenience and flexibility. The latest research from the Gift Card & Voucher Association (GCVA) and Global Data highlights how gift cards are an effective tool for channelling consumer behaviour by not only introducing new shoppers to brands but also encouraging them to ‘upgrade’ their purchase beyond the card’s value. The latest data in GCVA’s State of the Nation Report reveals gift cards to be an increasingly effective way for retailers to attract fresh audiences. According to the research, 63 per cent of gift card recipients discovered a new brand through their gift card. Among Millennials, this figure jumps to an impressive 74.6 per cent, underscoring the power of gift cards as a customer acquisition tool. By integrating gift card offerings, retailers can effectively raise brand awareness and reach untapped markets. Gift cards don’t just bring customers in—they encourage them to spend more. The data shows that 61 per cent of shoppers redeeming gift cards spend beyond the card’s value, with many exceeding their balance by an additional £10 to £20. Consumers often use a gift card to ‘upgrade’ their purchase, going for a higher value item than they might have done previously. Gift cards are also helping to champion local businesses according to the research. Around 20 per cent of shoppers purchasing gift cards for themselves cited the desire to support local enterprises as a key motivator. This growing preference for community-focused shopping presents an avenue for smaller retailers to foster stronger customer relationships and bolster their local presence. The shift toward digital gift cards is further amplifying their impact, especially as a choice for Gen Z shoppers. The industry is witnessing a surge in digital adoption, creating new ways for brands to engage with their audience and influence spending habits. Also, encouraging gift cards to build relevance with shoppers who prefer digital shopping or to use mobile phones as their preferred payment method. Hannah Shimko, Managing Director at the GCVA, commented: “Gift cards have evolved into a powerful tool for driving growth across the retail landscape. From introducing new customers to encouraging additional spending, their potential is enormous. As the shift toward digital solutions continues, brands that embrace this trend will be wellpositioned to capitalise on these opportunities while supporting local businesses and building customer loyalty. “The findings showcase the untapped potential of gift cards in enhancing customer experiences, driving incremental sales, and fostering community connections, proving that this versatile tool is an essential asset for retailers navigating today’s challenging market.” 

The study by American Express to mark 2024’s Small Business Saturday in December shows that even faced with the force of Storm Darragh, over 10 million Brits shopped small on Small Business Saturday. The research suggests that a collective £634m was spent on Small Business Saturday in-store and online. The survey of 4,000 adults revealed average spend per person on the day was the highest since 2020, with top reasons for shopping small including wanting to support business owners on the high street (53 per cent) and recognising that it has been a tough period for small businesses (39 per cent). Encouragingly, seven in 10 (70 per cent) adults surveyed said they will continue to shop small next year because of the positive impact these businesses have on local communities. These figures are based on a third-party study that gathered consumer self-reported data from a nationally representative sample of UK adults – and does not reflect actual receipts or sales from Small Business Saturday, or American Express Cardmember spending data. The research asked consumers about their level of support for small businesses across this year; of those upping their support, they are doing so in a variety of ways; almost three quarters (72 per cent) say they are shopping small where possible; three-fifths (60 per cent) are recommending small businesses to friends and family; and nearly one-third (31 per cent) are posting positive reviews online. American Express is founder and principal supporter of Small Business Saturday, which encourages consumers to ‘shop small’ and support independent businesses in their communities. It is the UK’s most successful small business campaign; over the 12 years it has been running in the UK, it has engaged millions of shoppers and seen billions of pounds spent with small businesses. Widespread support for this year’s Small Business Saturday campaign came from across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosting a reception for small businesses at Downing Street and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves undertaking a special visit to meet small firms in Leeds. Government ministers joined MPs from all political parties, including the Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch, in posting their support across social media. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham were also among senior figures supporting the campaign. Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday, said: “I’m thrilled to see so many people out supporting small businesses on Small Business Saturday, even despite the weekend’s terrible weather. Not only that, but spend per shopper is up this year, showing a really encouraging trend for small businesses looking for a Christmas boost. It is so critical for businesses that we get out to support them, not just this weekend but throughout the festive season. Being conscious about where our spend goes, even when budgets are tight, gives consumers the power to make a real difference to communities. Together we can shepherd in an optimistic 2025.” Dan Edelman, UK General Manager, Merchant Services, American Express, said: “Small businesses are vital to local communities so it’s incredibly encouraging to see this level of support on Small Business Saturday, even with the bad weather across most of the country. Looking ahead, it’s positive that consumers are intending to continue their support into next year too, something which will help keep local high streets thriving.”

12 Sara rescues Crafter’s Companion Sara Davies, the entrepreneur and business mentor, has announced that she has stepped in to rescue Crafter’s Companion – the business that she founded when she was still at university. Crafter’s Companion had been put into administration by its current directors who had pursued an ambitious growth strategy, which had not succeeded. The Company had reached a point where it didn’t have sufficient working capital to continue to operate, and it was put into administration on 7th January, 2025. Recognising the strength of the brand, and the talent and loyalty of the Company’s employees, Sara Davies decided to immediately purchase the business from the administrator and organise a financial restructuring that will give Crafter’s Companion the working capital that it needs to flourish again. As a result of this restructuring, the large majority of jobs have been saved and the Company will continue to trade as a going concern. Sara herself, who under the previous owners had no operational control over the business, will return as its CEO. The restructuring, financial details of which are being kept confidential, will allow Crafter’s Companion to continue to trade normally. Commenting on this announcement Sara Davies said: “Crafters Companion, as everyone knows, means a huge amount to me. Having founded it while I was still at university, to have this chance to bring the company back on track is an opportunity I grabbed with both hands. There’s no secret that the company was struggling post-pandemic, and its owners tried to pursue an expansion strategy at a time of real economic uncertainty, which was unfortunately unsuccessful - as everyone knows, it’s an unprecedentedly difficult time for many retail and consumer businesses. “However, looking to the future, we have a new financial structure in place which means we have managed to save the large majority of jobs in the company – and in particular in the Northeast of England, and ensure that we continue trade as a going concern. This means a lot to me. To be going back into the business alongside the fantastic team at Crafter’s Companion is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Consumer interest in crafting has never been stronger, and with customers of every age recognising the well-being and mental health benefits of creating beautiful things, I am looking forward to help drive the strategy of the company again.” Pantone unveils Colour of the Year 2025 Stock buying lists at the ready; Pantone, the global colour authority and provider of professional colour language standards and digital solutions for the design community, today introduced Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse. An evocative soft brown that transports our senses into the pleasure and deliciousness it inspires: cacao, chocolate and coffee, appealing to our desire for comfort. “Underpinned by our desire for everyday pleasures, Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence.” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director Pantone Colour Institute. “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, it extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe; presenting a discrete and tasteful touch of glamour.” There’s a growing movement to align ourselves more closely with the natural world. Characterised by its organic nature, Pantone 17-1230 Mocha Mousse honours and embraces the sustenance of our physical environment. Imbued with authenticity, it finds harmony and balance between the demands of modernity and the timeless beauty of artful creation. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute added: “With that in mind, for Pantone Colour of the Year 2025 we look to a colour that reaches into our desire for comfort and wellness, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others.” In celebration of the 26th anniversary of Pantone Colour of the Year, Pantone will also for the first time highlight the colour in events and experiences all over the world. From New York and London, to Shanghai and Mumbai, Pantone will be sharing public spaces and colour events that will make Pantone Colour of Year 2025 accessible for all. Milan is constructed using a 60 per cent cotton and 40 per cent tencel blended yarn. Tencel is a cellulose fibre which is made by dissolving wood pulp. Tencel is from sustainably sourced wood pulp, primarily from eucalyptus trees. The production process is eco-friendly, utilising a closed-loop system that recycles almost all the solvents and water used. Tencel is known for its softness, breathability, and biodegradability Tencel fibres have better absorption, breathability, and antibacterial properties than cotton – all of which improve the day-to-day comfort of the garment. Acorn Fabrics has introduced this sustainable fabric by weaving a timeless, subtle twill. Milan is woven using 60’s yarns in a more open thread configuration, yielding a lighter, airier fabric with excellent fluid drape and a silky handle. The company has complemented the aesthetics of the fabric by piece dying it in a range of more natural, earthy tones like the Milan Olive - our favourite! Like all our fabrics the Milan can be purchased by the metre. Swatches are also available which are free of charge with only the carriage to be paid (maximum of 10 swatches per order). +44 (0)1282 698 662 www.acornfabrics.com BEHRENS FABRICS Behrens has a wide variety of new collections arriving from suppliers for delivery in the second half of 2025, including the second release from the newest division of Northcott, Anna Maria Textiles. WOVEN takes place across Kirklees every other year. Established in 2019, the festival has helped communities across Kirklees celebrate the region’s textile heritage and find out more about the future of textiles in the region and further afield. The month-long event will showcase the rich textile history of the area as well as explore cutting-edge developments in the industry. The theme for WOVEN 2025 is Connecting Culture, bringing communities together through the shared language of textiles. Each year the festival attracts more than 100 events, including exhibitions, workshops, talks and community projects across Kirklees. One festival highlight will be the installation of The Red Dress, a globally-travelled collaborative embroidery project, which will be on display at Oakwell Hall. The Red Dress project was initiated by artist Kirstie Macleod in 2009 to help marginalised women tell their stories through stitching, uniting people around the world without borders. The dress now features the work of more than 300 embroiderers from 51 countries and has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. Back to the local community WOVEN 2025 is once again calling for community groups, organisations and artists to submit event proposals for inclusion in the festival programme. To support local initiatives, WOVEN will be offering micro-grants through crowd-funding platform Growing Great Places to help bring textile-related projects to life, as well as advising on project ideas, delivery and marketing. Free and ticketed events During the festival, various free and ticketed events will celebrate textiles all across Kirklees, with exhibitions showcasing local and international textile art, workshops teaching traditional and innovative textile techniques, talks and tours exploring the region’s textile heritage and future and community projects connecting diverse cultural backgrounds through textiles. h+h cologne is taking place earlier this year. Tell us what we need to know. Yes, we’re taking place a little earlier than usual, but besides that, trade visitors can expect a new iteration of h+h cologne that they’re used to. Actually, an even better one. That’s because we not only get to see many industry leaders back in Cologne but we’ve also expanded our event program. That goes from an improved version of what’s going to happen on our stage up to two new zones – the Green Zone and Trend Zone – as well as an increased number of startups and new concepts in our Easy Entry Zone compared to 2024. So, we’re taking big steps into the future to not only create a unique experience for all exhibitors, but also all trade visitors. Especially those with a local retail shop. The show proudly supports Local Retail, tell us more... This year’s key theme is called, Local Retail: Creating the Future. What we want to achieve with this is to strengthen the local retail shops we all love, and which are endangered by the online competition and the ever faster going digital progress. We identified three topics, or you could call them pillars, on which we build all of this year’s event programme. These three topics are: ‘trends & innovation’, ‘marketing & technology’ as well as ‘business development & sustainability’. To create the biggest impact for our trade visitors, we’ve invited a range of experts to talk on our stage. All of them have years of experience in their own respective field and are professionals for specific topics. Having the chance to get first-hand knowledge is incredibly valuable. And the best part is, all the masterclasses and panels that are taking place in our Talk Zone as well as all workshops in our Creative Zone are free of charge for our visitors. We really want to use h+h cologne as a platform for the handicraft industry to connect and grow. Are there any talks, workshops, or demos at this year’s event? Just like last year, our event programme is split into different so-called Zones. In our Talk Zone we’re going to host multiple masterclasses, panels, talks and lectures. Our Creative Zone is the place for everyone who wants to get creative. In guided workshops, trade visitors have the chance to learn new techniques and connect with like-minded people. Lastly, there’s the Academy Zone. You can imagine this Zone like a place for deep dive workshops where a topic that was discussed on the Talk Zone’s stage earlier gets intensified. This is where detailed aspects of different topics are presented and elaborated. In this Zone there’s only limited space for participants, who need to buy their ticket beforehand. I’d like to give a few examples on different topics people can get excited about. For example, there’s a talk on 7th March called, Social media & meaningful CREATIVE IN COLOGNE Katrin Schön, Director of h+h cologne talks to Craft Focus about the upcoming show, taking place this March 26

cooperations with influencers. And on Saturday, 8th March, there’s a panel called, Sustainable yarns in your product range: your key to more sales?. On Sunday again, there’s a workshop about upcycling. And these are just three random examples of the wide range our event programme has to offer. So yes, there are going to be talks, workshops and demos. And we can’t wait for our trade visitors to experience them all. What speakers will you be welcoming to the stage? We’ve invited a wide range of speakers to Cologne, each being an expert of their own respective field. Frank Rehme for example is a German trade expert with more than 35 years of experience. Nastia Mohren is a content creator with an expertise in DIY content. Also, the Frauhofer IIS is presenting the research results that focused on the local retail of the future. We highly recommend visiting our event website to get the full idea of all the different names, panels and workshops of this year’s fair. How is the show promoting the importance of sustainability? This year, we’re introducing two new Zones to h+h cologne: The Trend Zone and the Green Zone. Both are in partnership with the local working group of circular design, the designdirective & Julian F. Eckes. With the increasing spread of sustainable alternatives, the need for orientation in the industry is also growing. The new zones therefore offer exciting insights into the green segment: while the Green Zone showcases environmentfriendly products from our exhibitors it also focuses on sustainable product concepts and offers various modular perspectives on future-orientated action. The Trend Zone on the other hand is specifically dedicated to sustainable fabrics and innovative materials. What else can exhibitors and visitors look forward to? One highlight of each iteration of h+h cologne clearly is the networking aspect. It’s a place to meet colleagues and business partners. So, getting to meet like-minded people and those producing the ware you sell, surely is something we all look forward to. It’s something we always see and hear as feedback. Another thing is the creativity that lies in the air. Our Creative Zone is the perfect example for this. It’s a place where people get to learn new techniques, try out new products and form them into something original. Seeing all these creative minds coming together, helping each other grow and learn new things is fantastic. It’s always exciting to be amid it all. What newcomers are you welcoming to this year’s show? There are multiple ones, I could talk about, but there are two projects I’d love to highlight. One is a project from the Technical University of Chemnitz, which is called ‘textil trainer’; together with industry representatives they put together online courses that will help career starters and changers to get necessary knowledge of the handicraft industry. It even supports different languages to make it accessible for as many people as possible. With this they aim to combat the omnipresent shortage of skilled labor in the industry. Also, I’d like to highlight a company called GOR Wollen Mill. Founded by a married couple living in Australia, the two of them create yarn from alpaca and sheep wool in the outskirts and committed themselves to eco-friendly practices. That goes from using natural energy sources like solar, water and wind up to the fact that each product is crafted from raw fibre to finished yarn. A great example of how green solutions can look like. Stories like these can be found all over h+h cologne. It truly is a place full of inspiration, creativity, and passion and therefore the reason why I love working on this project year after year. How can interested buyers sign up to the event? That’s extremely easy: Just visit our website hh-cologne.com, navigate to our ticket shop and get yourself a ticket. And with a simple task like that, we welcome you to h+h cologne from 7th to 9th March 2025. We’re waiting with well-known international brands, an exciting event program and tons of interesting people and stories for you. Make sure you don’t miss out! h+h cologne 7th to 9th March 2025 www.hh-cologne.com 27 H+H PREVIEW

ArtisanMadeuk returns for its third year in Skipton, North Yorkshire on Saturday, March 22nd to March 23rd, 2025, promising a one-of-a-kind experience in the realm of art and crafts trade shows. ArtisanMadeuk has an exclusive focus on 100 per cent British handmade products. ArtisanMadeuk is only open to the trade industry. Held at a working cattle auction mart, exhibitors set up shop in cleaned-out cattle pens. Forget about white carpets and posh drapes; here, it’s all about concrete and metal. The focus, however, remains on the art and craftsmanship on display, rather than the opulence of the surroundings. Exhibitors find relief in the fact that the cost to exhibit is approximately a quarter of what they’d pay at comparable events, and the absence of charges for amenities (like plug sockets) ensures an accessible platform. Not to mention, the exhibition space itself is generous, providing a large canvas for artists and makers. For the visitors, all that’s required is a warm coat and sensible shoes. There’s free on-site parking and a café. Andy Lynan, the event organiser, underscores the suitability of an auction mart as a venue, stating, “An auction mart may seem like a really unsuitable venue, but it’s really not.” Drawing on the success of other retail events that Andy runs at the venue, such as Art in the Pen, now in its 19th year, and Crafts in the Pen, entering its 10th year. These events combined welcome over 8,000 visitors each year. “Visitors are more interested in the quality of the showcased work than the venue itself.” Andy adds. This year, over 150 makers are set to exhibit their creations, presenting a diverse array of products encompassing fine art, metals, woodwork, jewellery, glass, homeware, gifts, textiles, and textile art. Reflecting on the event’s initial year in 2023, Andy said, “We had around 75 exhibitors for our first event in 2023. It was a punt for both the makers and the trade buyers visiting, but it paid off. It was such a friendly and positive show with lots of happy attendees on both sides. We now have double the amount of exhibitors, many of them new to this industry. If you run a gallery, or an independent store, or buy for a garden centre or tourist information centre then please come and support these amazing makers and don’t miss out on this range of work.” Unlike many trade shows that feature numerous talks and prizes, ArtisanMadeuk deliberately avoids them. Andy says, “The event is crafted by the participating artists, who want to prioritise staying at their stalls, engaging with customers, and showcasing their work. In the spirit of fostering a sense of community, ArtisanMadeuk shuns competition and prizes amongst its exhibitors, emphasising collaboration among artists, working together to promote British handmade craftsmanship. It’s about community, SKILLED IN SKIPTON! ArtisanMadeuk stands out as an event created by artists and makers, for artists and makers. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the 2025 show! 28
