54 Vibrant creations Jyoti Chand, Creative Director of By Chand chats colourways, customisation and all things knitwear Tell us a little bit about the company. Where are you based? When did the company start? By Chand textile designs specialises in pure merino knitwear and macrame designs. Our products are made for statement pieces using bold, colourful and chunky natural and sustainable materials. We love experimenting with colour and have 28 colours available to mix and match in the pure merino knitwear range, and 12 in the recycled cotton cord macrame range. Who founded the company and why? I founded By Chand back in 2017 in the Peak District, and in 2024 we relocated in the beautiful (albeit cold) outskirts of Edinburgh. My love for knitting began years before I founded By Chand. Since a young child, and because of the influence of my own parents who were tailors, I’ve always loved learning new crafts and as soon as I tried knitting for the very first time, I was hooked! My friends and family began receiving knitwear for birthday and Christmas presents and seeing the joy on their faces inspired me to begin By Chand textile designs. How has the company evolved? What do you specialise in? By Chand first began with an acrylic knitwear range. We’ve always been drawn to chunky wool as they make such one-of-a-kind products so that hasn’t changed. However, we no longer use acrylic wool as it’s a synthetic fibre and is non-biodegradable. To reduce our environmental impact, we made the change to super soft pure merino wool sourced from Responsible Wool Standard farms in South America and South Africa. The company initially began with snoods, scarves and hats, and now we also offer matching mittens, gloves and blankets. In 2019, we also introduced macrame inspired designs to our range after I attended a workshop and felt as hooked to macrame as I did with knitting. The macrame designs include plant hangers, necklaces and keyrings and again make for bold and chunky statement pieces. Talk us through the current products you’re particularly excited about. Do you have a favourite? One of the special elements of By Chand is the customisation option on all our products. Hats with pom poms have always been a firm favourite with our customers and many customers choose matching hats for family and friends. I love working with customers on new colour palettes, offering my expertise in colour styling as well as inspiring customers to make unique choices. I love this part of the process and I know customers have then cherished these long-lasting products. Most of
