She didn't win the competition, and most people thought it was mad, but one other person at the school totally got it - Emma.
Three years later, Emma, inspired by the matchboxes, thought the concept could be the basis for a business and for nine months she and Hayley beavered away researching products, developing ideas and learning how to run an ecommerce company.
Over the last 11 years, Marvling Bros Ltd has gone from strength to strength and we continue to develop and grow our range. We sell our products around the world, while maintaining our company ethos. Our products are still designed, and hand produced by our small team in Essex.
What do you specialise in?
We specialise in fun and affordable matchbox-sized creative gifts, lighting up the world of your someone special with thoughtfully crafted messages – a present that truly says, 'I'm thinking of you'.
Talk us through the current products you're particularly excited about. Do you have a favourite?
We have a brand-new cross stitch Halloween Countdown calendar that we're super excited about. It contains 30 Halloween-themed designs – one a day to countdown to Halloween, 18 squares of pre-cut black Aida, 12 squares of orange Aida, eight skeins of stranded cotton, three tapestry needles, and a mini wooden hoop to frame your favourite cross stitch. This is all presented in a spooky 'cooks sized' matchbox.
Hobby & crafts have boomed over the last two years! Have you noticed any new trends?
For us, the cute and quirky designs are popular, particularly kawaii designs. Also occasion themed designs are becoming more popular, like Halloween.
Start with our best sellers or pick a selection that you think would appeal to your customers. Because of their size and price point, they work really well as counter upsells in bricks and mortar stores. They also work well bundled, for gifting occasions.
For subscription-based companies, a cross-stitch matchbox is a great addition to any subscription box.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Our cross stitch kits, are small with fun designs and are easy for beginners, as well as more experienced cross stitchers. Their presentation, in a matchbox, also makes them great for gifting.
Do you visit any trade shows? Do you plan to visit any soon?
We primarily sell wholesale online. We visit tradeshows as visitors to meet other creators. It is also a great way to spot innovation and trends in the gifting market.
What are you looking forward to most over the next year?
We're really looking forward to working with more retailers over the next year. We are currently working on a bespoke offering for retailers, where we produce an exclusive product for their brand.
What new products can we expect from you in the future?
We currently have a cross-stitch Christmas advent calendar in production, we're also working on some really fun new Halloween products. Plus, we're working on our new spring range of designs.
