We talk to small business owner, Rebecca about her online e-commerce fabric shop Sew-Drops Ltd

Shop talk with Sew-Drops Ltd: Image 1 How did your company start; what was the aim when it was launched? What was the response?
Well, it all started three years ago when I first started learning to sew. I fell in love with the craft after I unexpectedly attended a 1:1 lesson for my Mum. As the weeks and months passed, my knowledge and skills gradually improved, and in early 2018, I decided to enrol with City & Guilds to complete an online Patchwork & Quilting Course – four months later, I achieved my Skill Stage 2 qualification. After completing this course, I knew that I wanted to become a part of the sewing world, and that's when I decided that I wanted to create my very own online sewing business. So, whilst undertaking my City & Guilds: Patchwork and Quilting (Skill Stage 3) in autumn 2018, I began work on creating my own business and after 10 months of hard work, Sew-Drops Ltd. was launched in July 2019.

From the very beginning, our main aim was to stock high-quality 100 per cent cotton fabric(s) from top fabric brands such as Liberty, Lewis & Irene and FreeSpirit Fabrics but we quickly decided to expand on the type of products we stocked in order to offer a wide range of items to customers visiting our website. So, since we originally launched we're now offering products such as pre-cut fabrics, felt craft kits, sewing patterns, and I am using all the skills and techniques that I've learnt (and continue to learn) over the last three years to make a range of handmade gifts. When we first launched Sew-Drops last year, the initial response was somewhat slow. However, as the months have gone by, we've started to see a huge difference – more people are finding our website and liking and sharing our social media pages with their friends who love to sew. We've also been contacted by reps from well-known fabric brands and sewing companies asking if we'd like to stock their products on our website in the future, so that's extremely positive. Hopefully as the years go by, our business will continue to grow.

How often do you launch new lines and what are your best-selling products?
We try to launch new fabric brands/ranges or other sewing products at least once or twice a month on our website. Our best-selling products tend to be the fabrics, the fat quarter bundles are quite popular with customers, but the felt craft kits have also been popular with customers too.

Ho have you found life in lockdown; how are you planning for the future of your business?
Even though our shop is online, our business is run from home, so lockdown hasn't really affected us (the only thing that has been partially affected is the trips to our local post office which we've had to reduce to once a week).

One thing you should know about me is that I like to be organised. So, in early January 2020, I created a mini timetable of 'things to do' (which is regularly updated) in order to help me catalogue all the new products ideas and offers that'll be happening throughout the year. With regards to planning for the future of Sew-Drops, we'd like to continue to expand on the products and services we offer e.g. threads, books, sewing related equipment and accessories. And as well as maintaining our online shop, we're also looking towards potentially having our own shop on the high street in the future.

Is there anything else you'd like to add or say about the company?
I'd just like to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported Sew-Drops so far! Over the last year and a half there has been a lot of time and effort put into this business, and to now see that all that hard work was worth it brings me nothing but joy. Because of you guys I get to do what I love all day, every day. And going forward I am even more determined to continue to put in the work, my heart and my soul into this business.
